THE finals of the annual Wellington Klopse Unie (Coon Carnival Union) Competition took place before an enthusiastic crowd on Saturday at the Boland Stadium. Overall winners were the overjoyed K-Mark Hillcrest Starlights, with the Coronations and Disas in second and third place, respectively.
This year saw the 14-troupe Union split into two separate organisations, with the newly-formed Wellington & District Coon Carnival Association following a different parade route, and holding an independent contest.
The second phase of the new Wellington & District Coon Carnival Association Contest takes place at the Boland Stadium on Saturday 2 February, with the finals on Saturday 9 February.
As 2009 represents the 100th Anniversary of the Wellington Klopse, it is hoped that the two groups will reunite to present a combined Carnival next year!
