THE summer symphony season of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra starts on Thursday 7 February in the Cape Town City Hall and consists of four concerts, all conducted by the orchestra’s principal guest conductor Owain Arwel Hughes.
All four concerts start at 20:00.
On Thursday 7 February the soloist is Martino Tirimo - who has been lauded as ‘a pianist of vision’ and ‘an inspiring poet of the piano’ and who is currently recording the complete works of Beethoven – playing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4.
The other works on the programme are Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture and his Symphony No. 2.
On Thursday 14 February the soloist is the highly rated violinist Bin Huang playing Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D minor.
The rest of the programme consists of Liadov’s From the Apocalypse and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12.
On Thursday 21 February (City Hall), Saturday 23 February (Oude Libertas Amphitheatre) and Sunday 24 February (NAC Auditorium) the CPO with Pretty Yende (soprano), Musawenkosi Ngqungwana (baritone) and the New Apostolic Church Choir perform Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem.
In addition to this major choral work, the programme also includes Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (“Unfinished Symphony”).
The season concludes on 28 February in the City Hall with soloists Cara Hesse and Laura Pauna (the piano duo who have been playing together for seven years and gained praise during their international tours) and organist Zorada Temmingh.
The programme consists of Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini, Bruch’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Saint-Saëns’ sSymphony No. 3 in C minor (“Organ” Symphony).
