Big shoes to fill (editorial)
2008-01-17
THE local wave of exhilaration in the wake of the announcement last week of local boy Peter de Villiers’s sappointment as Springbok coach, has been marred by much scepticism in press reports. One has to keep in mind that after the president of the country, the job of top rugby coach probably carries the most weight - as well as criticism in the SA community. It has been acknowledged by SA Rugby boss Oregan Hoskins, that de Villiers was indeed a political choice, and the majority of the World Cup Springboks voted against him in an opinion poll. It is with this handicap that de Villiers has to take up his four year contract, and few would willingly change places with him right now. The shoes he has to fill are large, and belong to a man who has inspired the mighty Boks to great victories. But our man must be given a fair chance. Our Valley has through the years produced an array of fine sportsmen and women and we do not doubt that de Villiers will silence his critics and prove himself a deserving national coach.
