THE year 2008 could not have started off on a better note for the people of Paarl and the whole of Drakenstein for that matter, with the announcement that our local boy, Peter de Villiers, is the new Springbok coach. It was a proud moment and people took to the streets in an unprecedented way, knowing that history was being made. That Peter made it to the top of the rugby foodchain is no mean feat, and is indicative of the persistence and strong-willed character of the man. It also confirmed Paarl as the Springbok Rugby Factory of South Africa, something we need to capitalise on. What was even more significant was the spontaneous “crossing of the floor” of former All Black Supporters who have now converted to the Springboks, the rugby reasons being obvious. I suspect that Peter will be needing our support like never before. As a community we need to rally behind “Pietertjie”, as he treads stormy waters, a Peter de Villiers Springbok Supporters Club comes to mind. Not only should we make our presence felt at his first test, but we must ensure that we get behind him all the way, in our prayers and in our deeds.
