WHEN it comes to Paarl cyclists competing in big events, winning is almost a certainty.

With the 24Hours of Wiesenhof, the endurance mountain-biking event presented by Dirtopia last weekend near Klapmuts, Lorraine Geldenhuys from Paarl placed first in the category for Solo Women.

Mountain-bikers had to follow a route which is approximately 7km long circling through the nature reserve. The route started and ended next to the dam.

It was a tough event to say the least, as it revolves around a massive relay, where solo riders or teams of four riders compete to ride as many laps as possible in a 24-hour time frame.

The event started at 12:00 on Saturday morning and came to an end at 12:00 on Sunday morning.

Other participants from Paarl who also took part in the challenge were Johan van Rensburg (16 laps), Gavin Williams (13 laps) and Johan Jonck (8 laps). All of them took part in the Solo Men category.

Meurant Botha from Klapmuts was the organiser of the event and captained the Dirtopia/AMA riders team who took part in the Fun Teams category. They completed 30 laps.

The winners in different categories were: All Teams of 4 - Harmony Juniors (53 laps); Fun Teams X Dirtopia/ Ama riders (30 laps), Open Teams X Harmony Juniors (53 laps); Mixed Teams X Hairy Singles (40 laps); One- Four-Zero teams X 140 Sansbaggers (48 laps); Solo Women X Lorraine Geldenhuys (20 laps); Solo Men X Dane Walsh (34 laps).
