Students descend on college

THE Wellington campus of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology was opened on Tuesday by Prof Lineo Vuyisa MazwiTanga, Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Hundreds of new students have descended on the Wellington campus this year.

In her welcoming address to first years the Vice-Chancellor stressed that scarce skills are critically needed “as the economy moves to higher levels and as we aspire for an economic growth of 6% of the GDP.

“The need for growth and development in our country requires our youth to be engaged in acquiring new and relevant knowledge and skills so that we as a nation can improve our country’s competitive edge in relation to other developing countries.

“The single greatest impediment to South Africa’s economic growth and development, as well as of private investment programmes, is a shortage of skills at all levels for professionals such as engineers, scientists, financial accountants and managers, information technology specialists and local government technical managers”.

The official opening also marked the beginning of registration at the University’s three campuses in Cape Town, Wellington and Bellville.

The university has more than 29 000 students spread over its five campuses in Bellville, Cape Town, Mowbray, Wellington, and Granger Bay, with 1500 based in Wellington this year.

During the 2007 graduation ceremonies, CPUT awarded about 6500 qualifications at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including honours, master’s and doctoral degrees.
