Youth must also help themselves
2008-01-24
I FOUND the letter of Thami (“Municipality should do more for our youth” in the Paarl Post of Thursday 10 January). quite interesting I am proud that there are young people who are starting to stand up - I would just like to see more young people stand up and use the platforms set for them. I don’t agree that the Municipality has no youth funding. If this was true I don’t think we would have had a drug summit and youth day celebrations, to name but two in 2007. Like all companies the Municipality has a budget and you have to do your best with limited funding, allocated according to the needs of the Municipality. Yes I agree more should be done for our young people, but in our municipality we have housing and infrastructure backlogs as well, and what about our elderly and disabled? As for the funding and support of the youth organisations/structures in our municipality: in the last semester of 2007, Drakenstein Municipality invited all youth organisations to come forward and register to be on a database. The writer also states that youth organisations are dying because of a lack of funding and skills. This I would believe, but I reckon there are youth organisations that are also dying because young people don’t want to be part of it because no one wants to do volunteer work. In fact doing volunteer work you learn and experience more, because you do something for free, it’s something you love doing and you do it with passion. I agree the Municipality should be in touch with the needs of the youth, but young people, let’s be realistic and also know we can’t always get what we want or in the manner/way we want it. Young people should also ask themselves what am I doing and not only what is government doing. Youth Day Celebrations were held at Boland Rugby Stadium in Wellington and only a handful of youngsters showed up, despite the efforts made by the Municipality to transport our young people. Something for all of us to think about: it is easy to throw stones and we all like doing that, but we don’t want to catch the stones or take the stones that are thrown at us. May 2008 be a year where we as people of Drakenstein work together, for the future of our children. Earl September
