Memory and desire on canvas
2008-01-31
AN exhibition of paintings and drawings by Pamela Cockcroft-Lasserre opens at Off the Wall Contemporary gallery in Main Street, Paarl on Wednesday. South African-born Pamela, who now lives in Canada, has created images in paint, powdered pigment and conté on canvas and acid-free paper respectively. Models have played a dominant role and it is in the seduction of that three-way gaze between artist, model and viewer, that the essence of the pictures lie. Whether tumultuous or timid, convincing or ambiguous, the surrounding picture space would be determined before, during or after the model sessions out of which emerged thoughtprovoking relationships and sometimes inadvertent discoveries. In every thought, it is said, lies a story, and narrative is a fundamental condition of the human experience. Pamela’s work falls very comfortably into that notion. The selection of paintings and drawings from “In the Presence of Others”, “Sanctuaries” and “Fight Club” all, either individually or as a group, have deeper narratives woven into the medium. It is for the viewer to discover these underlying meanings, if he or she so desires. The exhibition opens at the gallery and design studio at 171 Main Street at 19:00 on Wednesday and runs until 2 March.
