PARENT, 7 February 2008) in his letter “Allegations about hockey field not true” (Paarl Post 7 February) should get his facts right.
One of our properties, Erf 1816 Paarl, extending from Thom Street parallel to Breda Street towards Malherbe Street, was expropriated by Provincial Administration of the Cape of Good Hope.
It was for the express purpose of establishing La Rochelle Girls’ High School hockey field on 11.8.1967.
At the time we were still occupying the house at 32 Thom Street (corner of Breda and Thom Streets). In fact, another property was also involved in expropriation for the hockey field.
None of the houses in the area had been demolished at that stage.
Also note that after the said date we still had to procure a property and build a house in the “coloured area”, so how could demolishing have been started in the “early sixties”?
Does Parent know for how much the whole area, consisting of a number of other effected people, of the hockey field was obtained?
Maybe this will help to make “a full story”!
