Art awareness for schools
2008-02-21
MORE than 200 learners from Klapmuts, Mannenberg, Nyanga and Sea Point will be treated to a visit to see the newly opened exhibition at Glen Carlou Wine estate . The exhibition is part of the collection of renowned Swiss art collector Donald Hess. This will be the first phase of CAPE Africa Platform ongoing art workshop series for schools in the Western Cape, as part of its exciting new Arts Awareness Programme 2008-2009. Cape and Glen Carlou provide the Grade fours and eights with background of the work and lives of renowned artists David Healey (SA), Outtara Watts (Cote d’ Ivoire/New York) and Andy Goldsworthy (UK), while Strijdom van der Merwe, land artist of repute from Stellenbosch, runs a practical workshop with the learners on site. The focus is on the environmental art, as not only a form of creativity, but as an experience which brings us closer to the understanding of our earth and the relevant challenges of our times. The programme’s young audience will no doubt add a fresh energy to the space, and could bring new insights to the art works in collection, as well as to viewing art in general.
