Wine evaluation course for all
2008-02-21
WINE has become an integral part of our culture, but how much do South Africans really know about wine? Not many people know that our first vines were planted in the Cape in 1655, or that Constantia’s 18th century dessert wines earned us an international reputation for wine making while Stellenbosch University developed the Pinotage grape variety. “And when it comes to tasting wine, many of us are hopeless romantics!” says Charl Theron, lecturer at Stellenbosch University and wine tasting expert. Many people find it difficult to tell the difference between a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and a glass of Merlot, or determine the flavour profiles of different varietals. But there is good news for those with a keen interest in wine! Stellenbosch University’s Department of Viticulture and Oenology is pleased to announce that their popular Certificate in Wine Evaluation is now available nationally to anyone in South Africa through a combination of internet-based distance-learning and face-to-face workshops over ten weeks with two practical three-hour workshops in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Students will learn the history of wine, the winemaking process, how to deal with wine in both private and commercial environments, food pairing; and most importantly about the actual evaluation and comparison of wines. Students receive a certificate from Stellenbosch University and the course is prescribed by the Wine and Spirit Board and the SA National Wine Show Association for admission as an accredited member of tasting panels. The next course begins on 14 April and registrations close on 28 March. Contact Candice Jooste on 021-683-3633 or candice@ getsmarter.co.za for further information.
