WELLINGTONNERS are gearing up in lavish fashion to host the second Wellington Wine Route Harvest Festival which will be taking place on the weekend of 15 and 16 March.

Food, wine, merriment and lots of entertainment will be on the menu, as wine estates and restaurants gear up to show visitors true Boland hospitality.

Take your pick of gastronomic flirtation or physical action – or a combination of both – as the townsfolk want to show off their pride and joy in and around town.

Wine and food lovers can prepare themselves for a kreef braai or picnic, while chef extraordinaire Louise Verwey of Onverwacht, will be attempting to break a world record by pairing a gastronomic 25 course meal with 25 local wines at Chef Lu @ Onverwacht.

Those craving a bit of action and who have always wondered how crushed grape skins feel between the toes, can hop into a vat and join the fun of grape-treading. Winemakers of the region will be around to talk about their products and even to listen to advice by their wine-treading-’n-tasting visitors!

Fitness fanatics can start their weekend with a 5,5km fun run through the vineyards on Saturday morning, while golfers will be able to show off their prowess with strokes aimed at a target.

Angling enthusiasts can experience fishing in local waters, as adrenaline junkies zoom about on quad bikes or tractors.

Those feeling like a romantic stroll, can follow the hiking trail along the banks of the Kromme River at the foot of the majestic Groenberg.

Kids will not be left out of the action. While their parents sip and swoon about the wines at cellars, jumping castles, pony rides, supervised airgun shooting and ice cream stalls, will be laid on at most venues.

Tickets at R35 per person will be valid for the whole week-end and are available from all participating cellars.

The price includes a complimentary wine-tasting. Early booking is advised.
