Being driven potty by Paarl’s many potholes
2005-06-23
IT seems Drakenstein Municipality has entered the entertainment business, providing fun to all motorists while trying to negotiate the streets of this town. It’s called “Miss the Pothole and Hit the Speed Bump.”
I have fun driving my kids to school every morning, dodging about 20 potholes from my home to school and back. Is this part of the “Keep Alert” campaign?
Well, you have to really watch out for those urban caverns dotted all over the place otherwise you’re not going to make it through level one of the game! And as Yoda would put it "So alert we have to be.”
Yep we have to use the powers of The Force to make it there and back every day, sensing those dastardly holes with our Spider Sense through the wet and fog and darkness…
Oh and level two is much more fun! If you are brave enough (or stupid enough) to risk driving at speed and hitting a pothole, you can always opt for another form of fun.
Here you have to watch out for those camouflaged bumps in the road which jump up like mushrooms and at places you least expect them to appear!
Now you see - these are to slow down those bad players who exceed the speed limit - but sometimes after twelve at night and you’ll see (and hear for miles around) “Need for Speed” re-enacted ala Vin Diesel during dice races.
How about erecting some speed bumps in Klein Drakenstein Drive if you want us to really have some fun? Or even better, how about introducing some law enforcement into the game after midnight and clear away the drag strip?
I’m sure the money, material and time spent on those speed bumps could have been usefully applied to fixing all these potholes (which by the way seem to be growing in numbers day by day.)
Maybe we can start marketing Paarl as the biggest natural pothole in Africa (that would certainly give Kimberley’s Big Hole a go!). How about planting some trees in them? Or we could have selective people disappear conveniently into them…
So, shall the Dark Side win again… or shall those potholes miraculously disappear during a day’s work? Potty in the Hole
