Toll road creeps closer
2008-03-06
THE tolling of the N1 between Paarl and Cape Town is a step closer to reality after being approved in principal by the Department of Environmental Affairs. In his Record of Decision, the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, said: “The need for the project has been adequately demonstrated and it will result in regional and socio-economic benefits.” The SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) must now do an environmental and social impact study before the project can be approved, in order to ensure that the proposed toll gates will not affect local communities adversely. A final decision on tolling of the N1 and N2 must be granted by the Transport Minister, Jeff Radebe, once the full proposal has been advertised for general public comment. Radebe must agree that the environmental and social impact studies won’t adversely affect the community. The funds raised by the toll fee will pay for completion of the second tunnel on the N1 to Worcester.
