Quartet performs in Franschhoek

2008-03-13

FEBRUARY saw the first of a series of spectacular monthly dinners at the Vineyard Brasserie to raise funds for the Franschhoek Valley Conservation Trust.

On 20 March, in a change of style and tempo, guests can expect a classical experience as the Vineyard Brasserie welcomes the four ladies of the Palm Strings string quartet.

Titia Blake (violin), Lucia Scott (violin), Barbara Kennedy (cello) and Karen Gaertner (viola) have all been principal players in the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and have a versatile repertoire to suit any occasion.

This magical evening will begin with complimentary drinks at 19:00 followed by the first part of the concert at 19:30.

Their programme will include popular pieces by JS Bach, Mozart, Brahms and Rossini in the first part and, in the second part, some of the wonderful timeless music of Jerome Kern, Gershwin, Cole Porter, Lennon McCartney and Irving Berlin played in classical style.

The cost is R250 including dinner without wine. Book at 021-876-3420 or email vine- yardb@hotmail.com.

* The Franschhoek Valley Conservation Trust was formed in 1986 to protect the unique beauty and heritage of the natural and built environment that make the Franschhoek Valley so special.

So that it can more effectively continue playing this fundamental role, the Trust is appointing a panel of experts, conservation architects, environmental lawyers, to advise and assist it in opposing inappropriate developments, in participating in the upcoming review of the Franschhoek Urban Edge Policy and in the longer term, in compiling a heritage inventory for the Franschhoek Valley so that it can be considered for designation as a National Heritage Site.

The panel already includes Emeritus Professor Fabio Todeschini, the co-author of the ground breaking Guidelines for Development in Franschhoek first published by the Trust in 1989, which are still used today by Stellenbosch Municipality.
