Church helps the elderly
2008-03-13
THE congregation of the Uniting Reformed Church in South Africa located in central Mbekweni, is doing all it can to make life a bit easier for the elderly. Led by Reverend Simon Konzapi, the church helps to feed the pensioners by offering them cooked meals and organises frequent activities which include exercise sessions, counselling and handicrafts. “This project is how the church shows compassion to our fellow man. Daily living for the elderly can be a struggle and when I do house visits, I can see in their faces that they are hungry and lonely. “Sometimes it’s hard to make ends meet. The only way the pensioners can get to the church is by being transported there. At the moment I’m using my own car for the job. “I’m appealing to anyone that can help us with transport to please help,” said Konzapi. The URC often receives support from other congregations in the region. The Paarlberg Congregation and the Wellington East Dutch Reformed Church congregations lend a helping hand by supplying the Mbekweni Church with much needed items such as wool for handicrafts. Social workers like Magdelene Dänkers also come by regularly to help with the exercise activities of the elderly. For further information, contact Reverend Simon Konzapi at 082-924-5420.
