Church keeps youngsters busy with hockey

IN an effort to promote Youth Day amongst the local youth a local church group initiated a hockey day on Thursday.
The Core Youth Experience, a youth development section of Church on the Rock in Paarl, came about the idea of a hockey tournament through parishioner Quinton van Rooyen.
Rooyen, who coaches hockey at Boys' High School, sold the idea to several schools and Boland Hockey resulting in a tournament which saw 32 teams of seven players each competing in 56 games.
Most of the established junior teams divided and combined to form several teams of seven players.
As an added bonus the Boland Hockey Association used the day as a practice tournament for their junior teams who will be competing at provincial level in the coming school holidays.
In the final matches of the respective categories it was a combined u.14 team of Boys' High who beat the Boland u.13B team 2-1, whilst a team from Girls' High were victorious 3-0 in the senior girls' section over a combined team for various other teams.
In the final of the senior section the Paarl Hockey Club’s A-team players were too strong for their opponents of Boys’ High’s first team, beating them 3-1.
"We’re looking at turning this into an annual event," says Van Rooyen.
"Many churches and youth organisations choose to igore Youth Day. We plan on making it an even bigger event next year with live music, more sponsors, and more teams with matches being played on two fields. We would like to make it more spectator friendly.
"We have also introduced a floating trophy and that will also be up for grabs next year," says Van Rooyen enthusiastically.
