Piano concert in Franschhoek

2008-03-19

LEADING South African concert pianist Christopher Duigan plays a unique piano performance in the historic DR Church, Franschhoek, on Friday 4 April at 19:30.

Well known for his innovative and varied programming Duigan includes a set of classical works in the first half of his programme including Franz Schubert’s seldom performed Klavierstuck D. 946 No 1, Frederic Chopin’s Scherzi nos 3 and 4 and music by Franz Liszt.

In the second half of the performance he includes an appealing selection with a trendy cross-cultural slant - Play, Piano Play.

Exploring the varied roles the piano has played in many world cultures, and across many musical genres, the music chosen makes the piano sing, dance and jump.

He includes Gershwin’s own transcriptions of his popular songs My One and Only and Someone to Watch Over Me, Dave Grusin’s Memphis Stomp from 1993 film The Firm, JS Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring as arranged by Myra Hess, Franz Liszt’s Liebestraume No 3, Scott Joplin’s popular rag The Easy Winners, Brazilian tango by Ernesto Nazareth and music by Scarlatti, Moskowski and Robert Schumann.

Christopher Duigan has made regular appearances on premier stages in South Africa and with leading orchestras including ClassicFm, National Arts Festival Grahamstown and solo engagements with the Johannesburg Philharmonic and KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestras.

As a freelance pianist and promoter he has built a popular following with local audiences over the last ten years with his Music Revival concerts including the Franschhoek Music Festivals.

Engagements in 2008 include performances in Cape Town and Johannesburg for the Steinway and Sons South Africa representatives and a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No 3 with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Tickets are R80 at the door with advance booking via Franschhoek Wine Valley Tourism 021-876-3603.
