Auditions and concerts for youth orchestras

AUDITIONS will be held in mid April for the top two youth orchestras in South Africa – the Sasol National Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Sasol National Youth Wind Ensemble – as well as a reserve symphony orchestra. The orchestral course of coaching by leading teachers and orchestral musicians and concerts under the direction of top conductors will take place this year in Johannesburg between June 26 and July 4, culminating in a series of concerts in the Linder Auditorium. The course will be preceded by the Ronnie and Rhona Lubner Music Awards for solo orchestral instruments, and is open only to course participants. Applications are invited from musicians aged between 13 and 25 on June 30. Minimum performance standard must be Grade 6 and postGrade 8 for the Lubner competition. A limited number of scholarships will be available to needy students. Auditions take place in Cape Town on 5 May. Applications close on April.
