THE Allandale Prison could double in size, should government plans to build a private prison on the prison premises in Paarl East materialise.
The Department of Correctional Services is still waiting for approval from the Treasury to go ahead with the proposed plans at the facility.
If the Treasury commissions the construction of the private prison at Allandale, the government will call for tenders for the project.
Private jails are run by private companies over a 25 year period whereafter management of the facility will be handed to the Correctional Services Department.
Other sites are planned at Port Shepstone, East London, Nigel and Klerksdorp.
Private jails are up to five times more expensive than state funded jails to construct, because the tendering process involves the private sector.
