BE indulgent and treat your senses (and your family) to a pleasurable autumn day out in the country for a down to earth cheese experience at this year’s SA Cheese Festival tomorrow to 28 April on Bien Donné farm between Paarl and Franschhoek along the R45. If you’ve always thought that only the French can produce decent cheese, there is a magnitude of local cheeseries with mouth-watering products which will prove you wrong. Beat the rest of the country to the exhilarating new cheeses and wines that will be launched and be on first name terms with some of the country’s foremost cheese and winemakers. In the World of Cheese at the Cheese Emporium visitors will be able to intimately engage with the cream of the crop in the way of more than 400 different cheeses. Jenny Morris, from Giggling Gourmet fame, will seduce visitors with her delectable cheese recipes enhanced by Checkers’ famous Championship Boerewors and certified natural lamb. Meander along the Absa cheese and wine route and discover small boutique cheeseries and Pinotage wineries. Book a free seat for a slot in the jam packed programme from the Absa stand and see chef Craig Cormack from All Things Culinary craft his walnut panade brie deep fried and served with rooibos tea sorbet, or rub shoulders with the Pinotage king of South Africa, Beyers Truter. After nibbling your way through all the stalls, you are really spoiled for choice wwith lunch in mind with various restaurants to choose from in the Gourmet Lane. Or simply fill your basket with goodies such as vine wrapped baked figs, biltong or Shiraz jelly, seductive shiitake mushroom condiments together with steamy fresh bread and find a shady spot. Be sure to head for the Surepure Cooking Pot, where all the live culinary action will take place with renowned chefs and food personalities daring visitors to move their cheese boundaries to new horizons. Celebrity chefs Garth Stroebel and David Higgs are sure to tempt your taste buds with their inimitable cheese creations. As always Nataniël, the face of Clover, will entertain with his dry humour and Jenny Kay, food editor of The Star, will enchant you with well-known Fairview and Lancewood cheeses. Also meet Nikki Werner, food editor of Fairlady, and get a new take on cheese fondue. Remember to collect your free ticket for Nataniël’s demo at the outside Clover stand. Even the young ones who do not care so much for cheese will have hours of fun at the Wilde Fruit Juice kiddies corner and Fair Cape theatre with its magic shows, high school musical dance workshops, jumping castles, clowns and colouring-in competitions, or the Milk Factory where they can see eye to eye with cows, goats and sheep. A limited number of tickets at R75 will be available each day. It is advisable to buy the tickets beforehand at Computicket outlets countrywide and online. Wine tasting glasses at R6 each will be on sale at the gates. Senior citizens will be able to enter for a mere R45 and children 12 years and under enter free. The gates will be open from 10:00 to 18:00 from Friday to Sunday and from 10:00 to 17:00 on Monday.
