Mbekweni athlete looking for record

Mbekweni athlete looking for record

2008-04-30

a STUDENT from Desmond Tutu Secondary in Mbekweni, Mzwandile Qashani, is one of the fastest u.15 100m athletes in the world. During the Boland Championships earlier this year, he broke the old South African record and set the fastest time for an u.15 in the 100m in South Africa ever. His time was 10,80s.

Qashani made his 2008 debut earlier this year during the Traditional High Schools athletics at the Dal Josaphat Stadium.

Qashani is a very modest young man and he is seen as a rough diamond in the making.

One of his coaches, Nobenzene Minnie, says that Qashani can still break many records.

“Mzwandile’s start is not as quick off the mark as it should be and we can still improve his 100m times if we work on that,” she says.

Says a shy Qashani, “I want to run 10,11s at the SA Junior Athletics Championship.”

This time is a good benchmark and would place him within the qualifying time of 10,28 for the Olympic games.

During the Western Cape Schools Athletics Championships he received a gold medal in the 100m, as well as a silver medal in the 200m.

At the SA High School Championships, held in Rustenburg recently, Qashani managed to rack up four medals - two golds in the 100m and 200m and two silver medals in the relay and medley relay.

This past weekend Qashani went to the SA Junior Championships in Pretoria where he and Luvo Manyonya, a triple jump athlete also from Desmond Tutu Secondary, competed against the country’s top junior athletes.
