Hospice wins award

2008-04-30

THE Drakenstein Hospice and their subsidiary, Butterfly House in Paarl, will jointly receive awards from the Impumelelo Innovations Award Trust.

Together with other deserving NGOs they will be rewarded for innovation in service during a ceremony in the Cape Town Town Hall on 17 May.

According to the CEO of Hospice, Elizabeth Scrimgeour, the Impumelelo Innovations Award Trust focused on how innovative Drakenstein Hospice was in the community and how they work together with government and other organisations.

Drakenstein Hospice was established as Paarl Hospice in 1991 to respond to the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of persons living with life threatening illnesses.

They do this through providing palliative (pain relieving) home-based care and training of care-givers. They also offer support groups and day care at their office in Breda Street, Paarl, and prepare food parcels for those unable to cook for themselves.

They have been actively involved in training volunteers and Department of Health professional staff, home-based care nurses and hospice staff in palliative care.

Currently Drakenstein Hospice cares for 280 patients per month, with 125 having HIV/Aids and 52 of these being children.

Five palliatively trained professional nurses and two social workers supervise this work executed by 18 employed home-based carers.

There is no need to suffer pain when you can access care through hospice (021-872- 4060).

Since 2005, HIV/Aids has become one of their strong focuses, that prompted the development of the Butterfly House.

It is a resource centre that has involved various community agencies to help with support, planning and currently the construction of the centre (see below).
