Women's soccer set to grow

Women's soccer set to grow

2008-04-30

TWO ladies’ soccer teams from Mbekweni entered the SAFA Boland Women’s Super League which kicked off at the Boy Louw sportsfields in Paarl recently.

The City Killers and Paarl Ladies are two of the sides who will be squaring off this season against 13 other teams from local Football Associations (Stellenbosch, Drakenstein and Breede Valley).

As this is only the second season that women’s soccer officially takes place in the Boland area, the point of the league is to help the sport grow.

The aim of the organisers is to promote the sport in such a way that each area has its own local league in a couple of seasons. Only the top two teams of each league will then qualify to compete in the Boland regional league.

With City Killers having a bye in the first week of the competition, Paarl Ladies were the sole representatives of Mbekweni when they took on the mighty Simunye Worcester on 13 April.

The girls from Paarl clearly underestimated their opponents, as Simunye thrashed them 11-1.

Last weekend turned out to be better for the local girls.

Paarl Ladies stood their ground much better against the University of Stellenbosch in their 0-2 defeat, while City Killers kicked off their season, also with a 0-2 loss, against Lady Hawk from Paarl.
