THE Neotel Academy riders travelled to Port Elizabeth this past week to compete in one of the highlights on the National Cycling calendar at the SA Track Championships. The championships was hosted at the Westbourne Oval in Port Elizabeth. The riders – from under 10 to Juniors – participated in different events at the championships. In the under 10 category it was the young Paarlite, Wade Theunissen (Neotel Rhadsport) who took 1st position in the 1500m scratch race and also 3rd in the Under 10, 500m Time Trial. The Neotel Yorkshire trio of Graeme Ockhuis, Jean Claude Jantjies and Luc Green were overwhelming in the Under 12, 1500m scratch race. These riders won gold silver and bronze, respectively. Jantjies also went on to be crowned the SA Champ in the 500m Time Trial with Ockhuis taking home the bronze. In the 3 km Jantjies also took gold and Ockhuis a well deserving silver. Neotel took bronze in the 3000m Junior Team Pursuit. In the Junior Team Sprint event the Neotel Academy/Boland team was second. Brandon Christians (Neotel Rhadsport) also went on to take the bronze medal in the Junior 1500m Final and came 3rd in the Junior Points Race. The presence of the Neotel Professional Team consisting of Nolan Hoffman (formerly from Franschhoek), Jaco Venter, James Perry, Jeremy Maartens and Henri Whitehead was definitely felt. The team was a great inspiration for the Academy youngsters. The team dominated the endurance events at the SA Track Champs with Hoffman showing that he is indeed one of SA’s top Elite cyclists. Other cyclists from Paarl who performed well during this event was Clint Hendricks (Rhadsport), Ivano Siebritz (Rhadsport), Bradwin Daniels (Peco), Brent van Rooyen (Peco), Natasha Marang (Peco) and Magdalene Nicholson (Paarl Cycling club). For the Veterans between 35-39 years, Joseph September came third in the 1000m Time Trial. After the championships Elrich Kulsen was appointed as the selector of u.23’s in South African cycling, while Peter Daniels was appointed as the Elite selector, Track commissioner and Transformation and Development commissioner.
