Substance on the walls
2008-05-08
A GROUP exhibition entitled Substance opened at the Paarl gallery Off the Wall Contemporary last night. Graphics, abstract painting, drawings and visual manipulation in functional wooden frames are on show. The inspiring international Dutch artist, Niek de Greef, together with local artists Colijn Strydom, Michael Taylor, Ingo Lützeler and Susquay Williams, have collaborated to present these unique works of art. The exhibition is curated by gallery owner Wendy Roux. The relationship between figurative, abstract and poetic art is reflected in the style of these artists. The narrative will follow a metaphysical approach, illustrating the disappearance and return of a main character, “shape”. The works, as illustrations, will present two sides of the “shape”, as a detached and abstract form for meaning, exploiting its graphic nature, but then also personifying qualities of “shape” so as to expose its melodramatic personality. Substance moves from Off the Wall, 171 Main Street, Paarl, on 30 May when the exhibition re-opens at the Lourensford Estate in Somerset West.
