Jersey shines at expo
2005-06-30
THE 2005 Standard Bank National Jersey Expo recently took place in Pietermaritzburg and drew the cream of South African Jersey breeders.
The expo, which is held every four years, celebrates the Jersey breed and only the best Jersey farmers from across the country are invited to showcase their prize cows at the event.
The expo awarded good breeding and genetics, good care and farming methods and cows that are assets in terms of consistent milk production and birthing good quality calves.
Samuel Walters from Bosplaas near Riebeek-Kasteel showcased 26 of his finest Jerseys at the expo.
Samuel is well-known in Jersey breeding circles and his cows are held in high regard and this year’s expo was no exception.
His cows walked away with the prizes for Young Cow Champion, Reserve Senior Champion (second place), Reserve Grand Champion Heifer (across all categories) as well as Reserve Grand Champion (across all categories).
Cheese lovers will be pleased to know that Fairview Cheese and Wine Estate have enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Samuel Walters.
Eighty percent of the cheese produced by Fairview is made from Jersey milk and Samuel Walters is Fairview’s exclusive Jersey milk supplier.
Not only has the milk produced by Samuel’s cows won a number of accolades over the years, but for the past three years Samuel’s herd has been on the top 10 SA Jersey Herd list.
“The milk produced by Samuel Walter’s herd is of exceptional quality and it is for this reason that Fairview chooses to buy its milk only from him”, says Chris Davis, Fairview Wine and Cheese Estate Marketing Manager.
