Doreen a hero to the homeless

Doreen a hero to the homeless

WHEN the Paarl Haven Night Shelter opened its doors more than ten years ago, one of the main aims was to ensure that the homeless and destitute of the area should never have to look outside the community for help.

The shelter currently cares for close to two hundred Paarl residents who would otherwise be sleeping on the streets, with no idea where their next meal will come from.

The shelter also focuses on reintegrating and rehabilitating them.

Doreen Stevens has been involved in the shelter for a number of years and in the past week received recognition for her involvement in this project when Nedbank named her a local hero as part of the bank’s Local Hero campaign.

“I was ecstatic when I heard that I had won, I was especially happy, because I knew that the shelter would receive R10 000,” she says.

Doreen adds that the money received will be used to set up a skills programme for the residents to ensure that when they leave the centre, they will be able to support themselves through the skills that they have learned.

The Local Hero campaign encourages Nedbank clients who are involved in uplifting their communities by awarding them “Local Hero” status and donating money to their cause.
