Award for woman winemaker of the year

2008-06-26

WHO is going to walk away with the prestigious Landbouweekblad Woman Winemaker of the Year Award in 2008?

Lorraine Immelman-Steyn, founder and organiser of this competition, says that the competition is definitely growing, and has become a highlight on the South African wine calendar.

“The number of entries grows annually, and the competition draws winemakers from established cellars as well as smaller cellars in lesser known wine growing regions,” she said.

The closing date for entries for the 2008 competition is Monday 7 July, and the winner will be announced at a glittering ceremony at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West on 24 July.

The Landbouweekblad Woman Winemaker of the Year competition seeks more than just good wine. The winning woman will also be selected on her overall personality, views on the wine industry and career goals.

After selecting the top wines, the six finalists were subjected to interviews from the panel of judges. The winning winemaker wins a trip to Bordeaux that is worth R30 000, as well as other prizes.

This year is the fifth year that the competition is taking place. Previous winners are Ivy du Toit from Jason’s Hill Private Cellar, Debbie Burden from Simonsig, Eleonor Visser from Winecorp and Susan Wessels from Vrede en Lust. For more information, visit www.sawinewoman.co.za
