THE decision by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) allowing Eskom to raise its tariffs for a second time this year, means that residents of the Drakenstein area will soon pay about 24% more for electricity.

The Nersa decision allows Drakenstein to raise its rates by an additional 20,2% (still to be approved by council) in addition to the average increase of 12% already approved by the municipal council last month.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has capped Drakenstein’s increase of electricity tariffs at 32,2%, but increases for residential consumers will average 24%. High and low voltage KVA) will be increased by an average of 22% (subject to council approval).

Small households (20 Amp connections) will experience a smaller tariff increase of 2,2% percent on the previously announced increase of 12% (total increase 14,2%).

In total the Drakenstein Municipality will have to pay 35,9% more for electricity from Eskom, but a municipal spokesperson has indicated that the difference will be recovered from other sources in the Drakenstein budget.

These increases could be effective as soon as from the middle of July for pre-paid electricity, while other tariffs will rise from paymentdate of 7 and 15 August.

The component of free electricity to smaller consumers will continue.
