Band loses brass

THE tunes of a popular gospel brass band of Mbekweni have been silenced, after a fire destroyed their music instruments.

The brass band of St Paul’s Apostolic Faith Mission suffered this severe blow last week, when a fire broke out in the building in which the instruments were stored at church headquarters in Thembelihle Street.

Band leader Vuyani Hans said that the fire broke out in the out-buildings, presumably after a child had left a lit candle unattended.

“My father, pastor Norman tried to douse the flames, but they were already out of control. He was however able to save a base drum and an amplifier.”

In total, instruments and sound equipment to the value of R90 000, were destroyed and the band has now been left tuneless.

The band and their choir, the Mighty Joyous Singers, have in the past had a close affiliation with the Department of Music at Stellenbosch University, performing at many of their music festivals.

“We have come to a complete standstill and cannot function without instruments,” says Vuyani.

Anybody who can assist the band in any possible way can contact Vuyani at 072-279-8337.
