Festival makes Winelands sizzle

SHAKE off the winter blues and head to the sixth annual Stellenbosch Wine Festival. With over 100 wineries on show, more than 500 wines to taste, mouth-watering delicacies and amazing entertainment, all under one roof, the Paul Roos Centre in Stellenbosch is the place to be from 31 July to 3 August. For the first time ever, the festival will be hosting a special Wine Connoisseurs Evening on Thursday 31 July. This exclusive evening is for the serious wine lover and will offer guests the opportunity to mingle with the top Stellenbosch winemakers and indulge in supreme quality wines. Tickets are R250, which includes snacks, food vouchers and entertainment. The event will take place from 17:00 till 21:00. On Friday 1 August, leading jazz star Lira will cast a musical spell on guests with a dazzling performance. The show will start at 20:00 and tickets are available from Computicket. Tickets cost R100 per person (performance only) or R150 per person, which includes entry to the wine festival as well as a cocktail and light snack. Some other programme highlights include fashion shows, cabaret productions by the dazzling Amanda Strydom and many more fun-filled activities. The Sunday is a special Family Day and there will be lots of great amusement for the young ones while the parents taste finest wines. On Saturday 2 August, visitors can also enjoy a taste of sporting adventure with the Stellenbosch Mountainbike Challenge, the largest mountain-bike event in the country. This event, which takes place in association with the Stellenbosch Wine Festival, gives adrenalin junkies the opportunity to ride through the vineyards of several wine estates. The Challenge will start and finish on the Markötter Fields at Paul Roos Gymnasium.
