PROSTATE cancer is one of the leading cancers and 2 500 South African men lose the battle to this type of cancer every year.

While a very high calcium intake might be a dietary risk, it would seem that a powerful dietary protective factor against prostate cancer is a bioactive substance called lycopene - a red pigment found in nature.

Scientists say that lycopene is one of nature’s most potent freeradical scavengers – protecting the body against the dangers of excess free radicals.

Lycopene tends to collect in the lungs and prostate and seems to reduce the potential of cancer in these parts of the body.

The best source of lycopene is the good old tomato, with other food sources watermelon, pink grapefruit, pink guava, pawpaw and red bell pepper.

According to research, cooking and processing of tomatoes increases its concentration and a little added fat is even better as lycopene is not water soluble.

And if you are going to have them raw, the riper the better.

* Early warning signs of prostate cancer include difficulty in passing urine, a frequent need to urinate, especially at night, and difficulty in starting and stopping the urinary stream.

All men over the age of 45 should have a regular check-up
