IN a derby fixture of the Drakenstein Local Football Association, the fixture between Paarl Soccer Club and FC Athletico lived up to the bill as a crunch fixture between the two strong sides. Both sides were very hesitant in the first half of the match, which was played at the Boy Louw sports grounds, and probed each other with constant attacks that were thwarted by both defences. The fisrt half ended on a dramatic note when Athletico was awarded a penalty after Revaughn Mitchell collided with the striker of Athletico. Goalkeeper Lindsay van der Berg pulled off a stunning double-save to make sure that matters remained even at the end of the first half. The second half began with the Paarl side showing more confidence, but they failed to convert the opportunities that arose. It was Athletico that made use of the opportunity when they were awarded a second penalty when Keith Goodwin fouled the Athletico striker. Athletico duly converted the penalty through captain, Johnwin Manuel, and snatched victory from their opponents with a score line of 1-0. The Paarl second team played their local league fixture on Sunday at the Mbekweni Stadium against Sea Birds. Paarl were in trouble from the start against a skillful Sea Birds side and were 2-0 down after only 20 minutes of soccer. Paarl slowly clawed their way back when Leroy Prins converted a corner with a superb header to make the score line 2-1 at the end of the first half. The Paarl side continued to apply pressure in the second half and played with a lot more confidence. In the process Bronwin Cornelissen scored his first goal of the season to equalise. Shortly after the equaliser Prins converted a through ball from Anthony Chapman to complete his brace of goals. The final score remained 3-2 in favour of Paarl.
