Boerewors-makers battle for crown

BOEREWORS-MAKERS will go all out to impress the judges in the first round of the 2008 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition taking place on Saturday at 10:30 at Checkers in Lady Grey Street, Paarl. Everyone is invited to go and watch the boerewors-fundis from the surrounding areas strut their stuff as they battle it out to determine whose boerewors is good enough to go through to the provincial round held in September. The event promises to be full of fun and excitement for young and old with various lucky draws and give-aways to be held during the course of the event. Between the sizzling fires and fragrant aromas of boerewors, visitors can also see performances by well-known local personality, Rooies, who will also be the MC for the day. An independent judging panel, selected and trained by the South African Chefs Association (SACA) will judge each regional round where prospective Boerewors Champions have to braai 1 kg of their own recipe boerewors which will be judged raw and cooked. The remaining regional rounds will take place on 2, 16 and 23 August at selected Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores country wide. The highlight of the competition is when all ten provincial finalists get together at Sun City on Saturday 4 October for the grand cook-off to establish who will wear the Boerewors Crown. The 2008 winning recipe will be on the shelves of all Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores by 15 October. Information about the regional rounds and winners will be announced in the press.
