Workers irate over party

MUNICIPAL workers were up in arms last week, in protest at the huge amount of money which the Drakenstein Municipality had forked out for a birthday party for Nelson Mandela. “R350 000 was spent, but we were not informed of the party,” said an irate spokesperson. “Only the political elite were invited and we, the ones that do the actual work, were left out in the cold. “The increases we receive this year are below standard and we feel that this money should have been spent on poverty relief.” According to the workers, many homeless people have to seek refuge under bridges and in open lots, some even with small children. “There is so much work that has to be done in Drakenstein, but there is never money.” One worker pointed to a safety railing next to the road which was damaged months ago during a car crash, but has not yet been repaired. “This is just one example of no work in progress and it makes our town look bad. “We feel strongly that the money could have been spent feeding the poor people, and we are sure that this is what Madiba would have wanted.”
