IN answer to the response from the Municipal Manager, Dr Sidima Kabanyane, on my criticism of the Mill Street library, one last comment:
It is admirable indeed that the Municipality has been instrumental in erecting a number of sub- and satellite libraries in Drakenstein, but by neglecting the main library, they are ignoring the aim of the Department of Arts and Culture who states: “Libraries are key-critical areas of learning, reconciliation and social integration”.
The Mill Street public library has such limited space, that social segregation is encouraged because more members cannot be accommodated.
Learners and readers are therefore forced to make use of the sub- and satellite libraries who do not have the resources available that Mill Street has.
Integration can be achieved in a larger, centrally situated building accessible to the elderly, disabled and learners who require up-to-date information technology in a spacious, attractive area within walking and parking distance. Paarl’s public library hampers equitable access in a democratic multi-racial society.
* PS: There are not 65 481 members at the library, but 65 481 books. There are currently nearly 17 000 members of the libary, as previously pointed out. If there were 65 481 members - they would really have problems!
