I AM utterly disgusted with Paarl SPCA who has managed to lose my cat.
When I moved onto a farm in Klapmuts, I discovered that the previous tenant had left behind nine cats.
I nursed them into beautiful condition and have now started to have them sterilised.
Because of the cost involved, I contacted the SPCA and the doctor kindly said he would help me by charging a nominal fee of R180 per cat.
My first cat was to have been neutered on Wednesday 23 July. “Peanuts” was so used to walking around freely on the farm and of course, he could not understand why all of a sudden he was placed into a basket and driven in a car.
When I got to the SPCA I was told which room to take him to. I explained to the gentleman that the cat was very upset and please to handle him carefully.
I then went into the admin office to pay and was about to leave when this gentleman came running towards me and said that my cat was very fast and had run away.
I cannot understand how they could have left the door open while putting them in the SPCA boxes. No-one even apologised. Now I am without one of my pets.
All I got told is that, when I get home, he would be there. I wanted to laugh. Have they not seen the road between the SPCA and the farm?
There are more trucks than cars. I also got told how another cat that got away, made it home to Paarl.
I then challenged the lady in the office and told her it seemed to be a thing at the SPCA that they let your pets get away.
I was also told “Oh, things like this happen”.

Linda Groenewald of the SPCA replies:
Firstly we would once again like to apologise for the loss of the cat. He managed to escape from the owner’s picnic basket before we handled him.
We appeal to owners to use suitable containers for their animals, so that they do not escape.
We would also like to request that anyone who sees a black cat in the area between Paarl and Klapmuts to contact us on 021-863-2720.
Cats sometimes do find their way home, so do not give up hope too soon.
