Church celebrates centenary

2008-07-31

THE 100 year celebration service of St George’s Presbyterian Church will be held on Sunday 10 Augusut at 09:30.

Reverend Peter Langerman, Moderator of the United Presbyterian Church in the Western Cape, will conduct the Rededication Service. After the service a Wall of Remembrance will be unveiled.

On 7 April 1902 the Presbytery of Cape Town considered ‘the desire of several friends’ under the leadership of James Harvie to start a Presbyterian Church at Wellington.

The Clerk of the Presbytery, the Rev JM Russel, was appointed to ‘investigate into the prospects of commencing a Presbyterian cause.’

Rev Russel reported on his findings on July 7, 1902 and the Presbytery resolved that the Moderator, Rev JJ McClure, would conduct services of worship on the first Sabbath of August of that year.

As the Moderator had been taken ill, the Clerk, Rev JM Russel conducted the services in the Hall of the Normal College in Pentz Street on Sunday 3 August 1902. About 40 worshippers attended the morning service and 45 that evening.

On 1 August 1908, the cornerstone of St George’s Presbyterian Church in Wellington was laid by the Right Rev John Dewar, Moderator.

This church has played its particular part in the community of Wellington.

Today St George’s does not only provide for the spiritual needs of its congregation, but it also actively serves the community of Wellington.

It houses a nursery school of three classes. Members of the congregation are actively involved in serving tea and sandwiches to the patients at the Day Hospital every morning from 09:00 to 10:30. .

Weekly cell groups are well attended, the men meet for fellowship on Saturdays and a women’s knitting circle meets every Wednesday to knit clothing specifically for prematurely born babies at Paarl East Hospital. The Green Bag Project feeds the needy church members.
