THE Wilderer’s Distillery, the internationally acclaimed Paarl producer of eaux de vie, has won another international gold medal, this time for Grappa Muscato.
The Distillery was awarded at the 2008 International Spirits Awards (Internationalen Spirituosen Wettbewerb) in Germany in June.
For Helmut Wilderer, this accolade is one to be cherished, winning it against 600 competitors from all over the world.
“We were the only South African grappa and schnapps distiller to have qualified,” he says.
On top of the gold, the Wilderer Grappa Pinotage and Wilderer Grappa Shiraz were awarded silver medals.
The Distillery was also awarded silver for its Obstler Apple and Pear, and the Vielle Prune Plum Barrique schnapps.
Wilderer has been making grappa in his state-of-the-art facility and copper still in Paarl since he established the distillery in 1995, a year after he arrived in South Africa. That year he put South Africa on the world grappa market by winning his first international awards. Since then, awards have come in multiples on an annual basis.
