Shopkeepers attacked

Shopkeepers attacked

2008-08-07

A CHINESE woman is fighting for her life, after having been attacked in her shop on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred shortly after 14:00, when Chinese shopowner Zhuofanes Zhuong had just closed up her shop, Guixiang Trading, at the corner of Main Road and Murray Street, Wellington.

It is currently not known how the attacker gained entrance to the shop, as the front door was locked.

Police are still unsure exactly what happened, because Zhuong has not regained consciousness since the brutal attack.

A neighbour in Murray Street heard her terrified screams and on investigation saw her climbing over a high garden gate.

He came to her assistance and never saw the perpetrator.

She was badly beaten and had sustained serious head injuries and stab wounds to her back.

Her small baby was in the house, but was unharmed.

Currently the only trace of the attacker is a bunch of keys which was found in the shop, which police suspect may belong to the perpetrator.

The reason for the attack is unknown.

Zhuong and her husband have been doing business in Wellington for the past year and a half, after they opened two shops. The other shop is also in Main Road.

The family had been living in the house behind Guiziang.

Anybody who can help the police with their investigation, or who has information about the bunch of keys can contact Insp Kees Pietersen at 021-864-9600.

* Another foreigner was also the victim of an attack, this time in Klapmuts.

A Somalian shop owner was shot after three men entered his shop in Weltevrede Park.

The men wanted to buy meat and when Nustafaad Hassan opened the security gate to allow one of them to look at the meat, a scuffle ensued. During this he was shot in the chest.

Hassan is recuperating in Tygerberg Hospital.

Nobody has been arrested in connection with the attack.
