HOW are we to get motorists to obey the rules of the road when our own traffic enforcement officers don’t get it right!
I know that this has been written about repeatedly, but when even traffic police ignore or, even more worryingly, don’t know that they should remain in the right-hand lane when entering a circle and wanting to exit halfway around it – but rather go through in the left hand lane – then we have major problems.
Man, it is frustrating having to dodge vehicles doing that every time you go into a circle.
As a motorist who travels through the Boulevard circle at the Paarl magistrate’s courts at least three or four times a day, it’s quite hazardous, to say the least.
The number of near misses I have witnessed over the past six months is scary.
But then again, perhaps the officer in the little white VW Golf *(CJ56864) heading for the traffic station had his head in his sandwich box already – the time was 13:02 on Thursday 7 August.
The worst thing is that the traffic signs approaching the circle are clearly marked and easy to understand.
Perhaps the secret lies in teaching the cops what to do and then get them to fine all those who do it wrong – it may be the carrot they need to learn – or perhaps they should be fined double the fine meted out to the average motorist.
