PAARL police station made history last week, when their station commander received the accolades as Station Commander of the Year once again. Director Mzwan-dile Tiyo has won this award for a second year in a row, which is the first time that one person has achieved this. And to crown this award, Paarl police station was placed second as Station of the Year. The South African Police Services Western Cape Prestige Awards are held annually to honour policemen across the province who go the extra mile in serving their community.Just to be nominated for these awards is a great achievement, as this year only ten police chiefs out of 148 were nominated for Station Commissioner of the Year. “I did not win this award on my own, but the entire station played an important role due to commitment, conviction and good policeing. “As a team we are only going to get better and we will continue to keep the bad guys off the streets.” Dir Tiyo was recently promoted to director and is now cluster chief, which consists of Paarl, Wellington, Paarl East, Mbekweni, Malmesbury, Riebeek West and Philadelphia police stations. Dir Tiyo invites all concerned parties to attend the community police forum meeting which is held on the last Monday of each month at Huis Pêrelvallei in Hospital Street, between 18:00 and 19:00. Paarl East police reservists also shone at these awards.Philander received the award for Catch of the Year, for their excellent police work which led to the successful conviction of a criminal, and the retrieval of an illegal firearm. Reservist inspector Angela Rass, also of Paarl East Police, was first runner-up as Reservist of the Year.
