Textile business in a spin

THE textile company Table Bay Spinners in Wellington is closing down at the end of the month. The business is busy completing final orders before shutting down.

Personnel cutbacks and restructuring have occurred over the past years after their weaving department closed down.

Textile businesses in general have been hard hit by cheap imports of clothing, and textile businesses in Paarl and Wellington have suffered staff cutbacks over the past few years.

“In three to four weeks we are going to close our doors. Everybody has been retrenched, including myself. We are working on contract until delivering the last orders,” says Alan Davies, acting manager of Table Bay Spinners.

Rumours of a well-known textile business in Paarl, Berg River Textiles, closing down, have been denied by Juan Lauscher, chief executive officer.
