PAARL actor Merlin Balie, stars in the South African movie More than just A Game which will run at the Paarl Mini-Max from 29 August to 4 September.

According to Merlin it was an amazing experience making the movie, which portrays the struggle of Robben Island prisoners to be allowed to play soccer for recreation.

“This movie is an example of an inspirational story that reveals the resilience of ordinary people when their lives get turned upside down by injustice - people such as Tony, Mark, Lizo, Sedick and Marcus.

“When the apartheid South Africa imprisoned them on Robben Island, they found solace in learning and in comradeship - and ultimately, by playing soccer, they were able to reclaim their humanity.

“Seeking permission to play soccer on Robben Island was difficult.

“The authorities had no plans to provide recreation of any sort. The master plan was to continually demean the prisoners, to crush their courage.

“But the prisoners kept the sustained pressure on the authorities for nearly four years, until they finally relented and allowed them to play soccer.

Also starring in the movie are Wright Nguben (a former Generations star), Tshepo Maseko (Isidingo-actor, parsons), Presley Chweneyagae (main character in Tsoti) and Az Abrahams (actor and radio dj at Heart104.9).

The director of the movie is Anant Singh.

The movie can be viewed every day at 19:45 from 29 August until 4 September at a special price of R20 (R15 if you show your Drakenstein library card).
