FOR the first time in five games the team of Vineyards picked a full strength team for their clash against Violets on Friday night at Faure Street Stadium. With six players making their return after being injured, Vineyards tasted sweet success by beating their opponents 19-16. It was clear from the kick-off that Vineyards would attack up front with their heavy pack. With their hard men leading the charge Vineyards quickly managed to score two unconverted tries to get a comfortable 10-0 lead. Vineyards also succeeded with a first half penalty kick to manage a 13-0 lead at half-time. With Violets deciding to throw the ball out wide in the second half, Vineyards found themselves facing a much more expansive approach from their opponents. Over-eagerness and foul play from Vineyards lead to several penalties for Violets, with flyhalf William Hendricks happily converting the three pointers. Violets also responded with a well deserved try before Vineyards wrapped things up with a fine drop goal in the last minutes by Adlee Moerat to win the match with three points. Vineyards’ tries were scored by Adlee Moerat (centre) and Jono de Freitas (wing), while Zahier Chippendale (flank) succeeded with two penalty kicks. For Violets Tyron Uren and Manrico Ca-rollissen played their hearts out up front, while Newan Dennis and William Hendricks provided the necessary attacking power in the backline. Vineyards’ second team won 15-11, the u.12’s won 7-5, and the u.14’s lost 16-5. Vineyards’ u.16’s beat Rangers’ u.16’s 28-5. * Vineyards’ u.16’s will be playing in the Paarl Regional Knock-out final on Saturday. The final will coincide with Al Azhar school’s rugby day at Faure Street Stadium. Vineyards’ u.16 team is still unbeaten this season in the league competition of Paarl region. The u.12’s and u.14’s will play Allandale at Faure Street Stadium on Saturday and the seniors will play at Dal Josaphat Stadium. Vineyards plays against Allandale this weekend at the Dal Josaphat Stadium.
