THIS year’s winner in the men’s division of the three-day Nelson’s Creek Mountain-bike Challenge will go home with R10 000 cash in prize money, co-organiser Meurant Botha of Dirtopia has announced. Riders in the challenge, which runs from 12 to 14 September on Nelson Wine Estate near Paarl, will be tackling virgin trail in an area that has never been open to cyclists in an event before. The first race will take place on Friday at 13:00. The winning time of the first stage is expected to be approximately two hours, while stages two and three are expected to take the leaders at least three hours. “The challenge will offer different racing in different directions every day. “After a fast and flat route on day one, day two will be much more hilly as we move into the Wellington Groenberg. “Day three is flat, apart from Paardeberg which is guaranteed to be a very challenging ascent,” says Meurant. The R850 race fee (R750 early bird special if riders enter by the end of August) includes camping at Nelson Wine Estate. Alternatively cyclists can check into one of the many cozy B&Bs in the area.
