Gates open for Gravel Travel
2008-08-28
SATURDAY will see Wellington Wine Route open gates to its first Gravel Travel event; an adventure in wine tasting, mountain-bike racing and home-grown family fun. Sample of Wellington’s award-winning wines and farm-fresh fare in the picturesque surrounds of Diemersfontein estate, with live music and a kiddies’ court. Don’t miss the Gravel Travel race – an adrenaline-packed 60km mountain-bike adventure across the Bainskloof Pass. A 30km race and 5km family route will also be hosted. No less picturesque is the 30km course for less experienced bikers, while a 5km course is ideal for families. Wellington Gravel Travel will take place from 8am to 5pm; with mountain-bike races starting from 9am. The action will be centred in the Wine and Food Court, perched aloft the picturesque Diemersfontein estate. Amongst the estates on show are Nabygelegen Private Cellar, makers of the eccentric Scaramanga blend; Diemersfontein with their popular coffee Pinotage; Welbedacht/Schalk Burger & Sons, and Linton Park; both with their award-winning Groenberg terroir Merlot. South Africa’s only purveyors of Savingnac; a fine cognac produced from premium Chenin Blanc, will join organic and home-grown gourmet stalls boasting fresh breads, olive oils, goat’s milk cheeses and Pinotage jam. Children will be entertained at a special kiddies’ court, with face-painting and jumping castles amongst the treats; while warm and hearty meals will be served throughout the day in Wellington’s tea gardens and restaurants. Live music will feature at the Wine & Food Court for the duration of the event. An entry fee of R20 to the Wine and Food Court at Diemersfontein will include a wine glass and tastings from the following estates: Andreas Wines, Bosman Family Wines, Bovlei Winery, Dun- stone Winery, Diemersfontein Wines, Doolhof Wine Estate, Linton Park Wines, Mont du Toit, Nabygelegen Private Cellar, Savingnac de Versailles, Wamakersvallei Winery, Welbedacht/Schalk Burger & Sons and Wellington Winery. Visit www.graveltravel.co.za. Entry to the Wine and Food Court is free for race participants
