Nursing staff have no respect

I would like to respond to the letter “Nursing staff disappoints at this hospital”. The answer from Dr Breslau Kruger of Paarl Hospital is not satisfactory. Recently I also experienced this lack of service from the nursing staff. My mother was admitted to the emergency unit. I was appalled at the attitude of most of the nursing staff. Most of them do not know how to speak to people, despite the fact that they are in an occupation where you would at least expect professionalism. Even the chemist did not know that when someone enters your office you greet that person before instructing the patient, who is obviously sick, to put down his file and he will get back to you. Not a good morning, nothing! To get back to the nursing staff. Do they even know that the patients they are treating are people, people just like them, with a mother, daughter, son, brother or sister? It could be your mother you treat with disrespect. I am sure you do not treat your family like this. I want to appeal to all the nursing staff, if you do not want to be in this profession, GET OUT! This is supposed to be a calling, not a favour you do for someone. What I have also noticed is that the doctors are fantastic and really very helpful, but the nurses have an attitude that they just don’t care. I know that nurses are poorly paid, but so are teachers, and all other caregivers. But how would you feel if your child gets treated like this because the teacher feels undervalued? I also got the impression that the nurses think that if someone is admitted who is obviously poor, drunk and smelly it gives them the right to judge that person. What did you expect when you decided to become a nurse? That you would only treat rich people? Come on people. Treat everyone with the respect that they deserve and not the disdain we as patients/clients can see on your faces. Disgusted
