Policeman's suicide
2008-09-04
A POLICE officer living in Paarl turned his weapon on himself on Monday evening, after a lovers’ quarrel in Wellington. Constable Godfrey Claassen (27) of Milkytown went to the home of his ex-girlfriend, Charlene Jackson, in Nelson Street, in Van Wyk’s Vlei, Wellington, to plead with her to continue their relationship, which ended a month ago on his birthday. While they were discussing this, their three-year-old daughter sat on Claassen’s lap. Jackson stood by her decision and he eventually left the house. According to reports, Claassen was completely calm and showed no sign of his intentions. But once inside his vehicle, he shot himself in the head with his service pistol. He was currently employed at the Philadelphia police station.
